Harley-Davidson: Designing Customs

Harley-Davidson Motor Company celebrated its 105th anniversary in 2008 with a four-day celebration in Milwaukee that featured concerts, a motorcycle parade, exhibits, and street parties all over the city. For the milestone, ISG Productions conceived and produced a 15,000 sq.ft. exhibition on the design, styling, and engineering of Harley-Davidsons and co-produced a DVD commemorating the anniversary.

Madison Square Garden called in ISG Productions to organize its holdings of more than 70,000 items, ranging from sports memorabilia to rock and roll ephemera. The assignment resulted in the design of a custom database and the complete cataloguing and digitization of a collection that represents many streams of American culture.

A live and webcast event hosted by Anthony Mason and featuring such guests as Nile Rodgers, John Oates, Julie Taymor, and Peter Asher. ISG Productions created a “pop-up” museum with historic photographs and Beatles memorabilia in conjunction with the evening.

For Radio City Music Hall, one of the great repositories of American theatrical history, Sheppard Gallagher undertook the complete organization of its collection of more than 100,000 artifacts, including costume designs, set designs, photographs, and ephemera. By the time the consultancy was completed, the firm had catalogued, digitized and created a custom database for the archive.

As Director of Exhibitions for this 150,000 sq-ft museum, Ileen Sheppard Gallagher planned, developed and managed its inaugural galleries, including thematic, solo artist, and historical exhibitions on rock and roll and more than 40 film, video and interactive presentations. She provided management interface between architects, exhibition designers, and media producers.

ISG Productions was retained by Bravado and the Rolling Stones to organize the retrospective photography exhibition at Somerset House that served as a focal point of the Stones’ 50th anniversary extravaganza in London. The firm also managed the international tour.

When the Connecticut studio of the late modernist composer Charles Ives faced possible destruction, the Academy of Arts and Letters came to the rescue, arranging for the room to become a permanent exhibition in its galleries in Manhattan. Placed in charged of the project, ISG Productions catalogued the studio’s contents, curated and meticulously reassembled over 3,000 items for the reinstallation. The firm also produced interpretive materials for the exhibition in the surrounding galleries.

ISG Productions helped plan and develop this 77,000 sq. ft. museum, which was established by Walt Disney’s daughter to tell the story of her father’s life and legacy. As well as interpretive planning, the firm provided project management for exhibition design and fabrication, media production, programming, and operations.
